Conwy Harbour, North Wales, viewed from Conway Castle.(1/4)
The castle was built over 44 years and was completed in 1327. It was built to defend the walled town of Conwy and guard the harbour and entrance to River Conwy.
In the past few decades, the importance of recreational boating has grown in Conwy Harbour. One marina alone, opened in 1992, provides 500 moorings and 300 serviced berths.
Conwy Morfa, a marshy spit of land on the west side of the estuary, played an important role in the successful Normandy Landings of World War Two. It was here where development and construction took place of “The Mulberry”. These were mobile, prefabricated harbours which were towed to the French coast and allowed the Allies to supply their beachheads without having to capture one of the heavily defended Channel ports.
