Buddhist Temple, Ceylon. (5/9)
Temple of the Tooth, Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
Said to be the holiest Buddhist shrine in the country, the temple was built in the 1600s. It houses a relic, believed to be the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. The dates of the Buddha’s birth and death are uncertain. But some scholars say he was born about 563 BCE and died aged 80 in 485 BCE. According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre in India. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD.
